Persian Breed Profile
|
|
A much admired and well loved long coated breed of cats.
Loved for its laid back personality and stunning good looks.
The Persian cat is possibly one of the most popular of the long haired
breed of cats.
Some believe they have originated in Persia now known as Iran.
Others believe they could have originated from Russian cats as the need
for a long dense coat would not apply in the Middle Eastern climate.
Bought into Europe by the Romans and Phoenicians in approximately the
15th Century they were considered a Luxurious cat and were used as
commerce
They found their way into the UK in the early 19th Century and were kept
by the rich and Royalty as much admired pets.
Soon to be purpose bred and shown in England and exported to the USA.
Some of the original matings were to the Turkish Angora this lead to the
decline and extinction of the Turkish Angora in England as the Persian
took favour as their rivals.
Today’s Persian is a lot different to it's original ancestors that were
traditional long nosed cats
Brief Outline
They should be cobby, short in the leg, standing square, with large
round heads, small ears, large round expressive eyes and a good nose
break and a short bushy tale.
Some are extreme in break, known as the Ultra type.
Others are doll faced and some fall in between they are one of the most
controversial of breeds due to this anomaly of mans intervention in
changing the look of a breed
Most people have their own preference even in shows their is a problem
with which facial type is preferred this makes it very difficult for the
breeders and the show owners
Whatever their face shape the show cats should have a good well kept
long coat and meet the show standards for the breed.
The Persian is bred in most patterns, new colours and patterns are being
introduced all of the time and acceptance vary from Governing bodies and
Countries which may not be listed below and is only a guide.

Bad Press for the Breed
That PKD Polycystic Kidney disease
Is a condition that was discovered in the Persian breed when scientists
decided to experiment for what is believed to be a cure for the human
race.
However breeders are working on this problem to try and eradicate it
where possible.
I must point out that testing has shown that it cannot be cured to date
although work is always going on to find a cure for all mammals
However cats can live to a normal old age with PKD, show no outward
signs and die from old age or anything else attributed to the cat.
It is considered by some but their is no reason to assume that the
Persian Breed is any more prone to PKD than any other member of the Cat
World or mammal
As to date the majority of other breeds have not undertaken to test and
were not used for experimental purposes along with ferals to forward
medical science.
Testing to date.
