About the Arctic Curl

Our proposed new breed... I last year bought a white Turkish Angora female Knightsbridge Garbo - bred by Joyce Taylor

The kitten now Known to us as Lottie named due to Dave having a small win on the Lottery the day before he was due to bring Lottie back from London. so he collected his small win and then bought Lottie as a present for me on the same day. I then had a very good feeling about this new little girl. Not was she beautiful to look at very friendly and companionable but she came with an extra piece of luck too.

I have the Selkirk Rex which I have now successfully been breeding for the last 3 years.

I wanted to test mate the dominant curly coat of the Selkirk Rex and Lottie was my choice.

The Turkish Angora are a totally different cat to the Selkirk Rex.

Apart from the obvious features and shape of the cat being different, the Turkish Angora coat only has the two top layers without the woolly undercoat that both the Selkirk Rex and the Chinchilla and Persian have.

Lottie called early and on her second call I mated her to my cream shade Selkirk male hoping but not expecting anything from this mating I was at this point just testing to see if she would be suitable for breeding and the clarity of the Selkir curl when mated to a different coat type.
She only had 2 kittens from this first litter 1 black straight haired and 1 white curly.

The result of this mating although only 2 in the litter I was pleased with and as the whitea kitten has grown has become more charming everyday. the coat is absolutely gorgeous.
Some rex coats can be very fine especially those with only the 2 coat gene and recessive this however is not and is also dominant so should produce curly kittens when put to a straight haired cat just like his mum..

They will not be registered at GCCF as they are still probably one of the only governing bodies not to recognise the Turkish Angora. Hence you do not see this breed on the show bench or advertised for sale very often as they are still quite a rarity in this country but popular elsewhere on the continent.

Joyce is impressed with the curly kitten I have produced both in the look and personality and is offering her support to the proposed new breed. Everycat UK have asked me to lay out my proposals for the genetics, look and coat colours that I wish to achieve. This will involve loads of data collecting, genetic codes, patterns boards of
colours that could be achieved . Not to mention the breed (SOPs) standard of points.

I propose to have a breed that looks exactly like the Turkish Angora with the Curls on a semi long haired coat but with a slightly rounder eye.

My object will be and preference will be for blue eyed whites. Hoping to introduce the colourpoints. However discussions need to be undertaken with geneticists before any of the sops are set out and will not be set in stone until such times. due to the genetics that I am hoping to be working with are dominant and the colourpoint a recessive gene.

I may at a later date need to introduce another blue eyed breed of cat into the gene pool for the colourpoints and to maintain the large ear set as the Turkish Angoras are held high on top of the head like the Serengeti.

I have been in touch with a Balinese breeder who would be more than happy for the Balinese to become part of the new breed as an outcross as they share a similar coat and body shape although the ear placements have now been modernised in the new Balinese and they are more trianguliar shaped as opposed to the funny bunnies in the Turkish Angora said affectionately I might add, as they are a large part of the appeal of the Turkish Angora breed however these are thoughts behind the proposed new breed and a lot of groundwork needs to be undertaken in the mean time.

I do not propose to call them a Curly Angora Or Curly Turkish Angora the latter without the introduction of the curl is a totally natural breed from Ankara. The former a breed made in Britain to mimic the Turkish Angora called the British Angora and then I believe went on to become the Oriental longhair.

It has no association with the Turkish Angora at all.

My choice of name will be The Arctic Curl made in white to start with but due to the necessary hibridyzing will also have other self colours too. The first outcross from a repeat mating could be White. Black. Red or Tortie they can be either straight or curly. I'm only proposing to breed with the Curly kittens. None will be blue eyed but this is carried by Lottie hopefully this will come in later matings should it all come
together.

Picture of my white kitten as Ambassador for the breed.

Please come back and read from time to time and hopefully in a few months I may have an update on the advancement of The Arctic Curl or a collapse due to breeding not going to plan or too much opposition from the powers that be..

Anyone who is interested keen to help or wishes to breed or show in an exhibition at a cat show please feel free to contact me without obligation.
