Selkirk Rex

Welcome to the The International Selkirk Rex Cat Club UK.

Permitted Outcrosses

Persian. Exotic.Exotic Variants.British Short Hair and British Short Hair variants. Copies of the Selkirk Rex Policy can be obtained from the GCCF

Why all the outcrossing you may ask.

The Selkirk Rex breed is still in the development stage although breeders are working to breed everything in that is needed and at the same time breeding out what is not desired in the breed. This takes generations of known pedigrees to achieve a desired look that a breed will eventually take on permanently and guaranteed to keep the look without the outcrossing. A wide gene pool will need to be gathered with the desired guaranteed look and I believe the Selkirk Rex running through all of the 5 generation pedigree before the outcrosses will cease.

Persians

What we are looking for from the Persians

Smooth, round skull. A long full silky coat. Persians can produce some of the the best curly coats. Cats with a good break in the nose can be used. Cats with a nose that slants down from the break appear to work to produce the best width in the muzzle heavy to moderately heavy boning is another essential ingredient . Eyes must be round and level. A gentle personality

What we need to avoid from the persians

Bodies that are excessively short in the leg really small ears unnaturally short tails, cats with a break above the eyes. We do not want any flatness or marked defects in the doming or dips above the eyes, slanted eyes, badly draining tear ducts, very hairy faces narrow hips,

All cats with a Persian/exotic pedigree must be tested for PKD before out crossing or have 2 pkd negative parents

Exotics

What we are looking for in the Exotics

The same as the Persian but a medium length coat is required in order to procure a good curl. In both the breeds a soft/silky coat is needed to make the coat curl. a harsh coat will not work so well.

British Short Hair

What we are looking for in the BSH

A nice round head and broad muzzle. The muzzle usually chosen has the smile in the corners. The best of the British show cats have the correct shape bodies these are the ones proposed to be used in the breed standards for the UK Selkirks. Big whiskers are essential. The break on the nose of a good example of British is the desired look. Friendly outgoing personality

What we will try to avoid in the advancement of this breed will be

A cat with light boning. pinched faces. slanted eyes, unusual dips or bumps on the face and doming and narrow doming. Mouth and chin defects. either undershot or overshot a nose without a break. genetic health problems and personality defects.

The cat should stand with a gait that has the back end of the body just slightly higher than the front

Please note...Cats cannot be used with congenital heart conditions known in the pedigree. cryptorchidism or polycystic kidney disease.
